HELP: ONLINE ORIENTATION TRAINING FOR ANIMAL USERS

1. Getting Started

This tutorial is designed to assist you in using the AALAS Learning Library. Rutgers is using this platform to present and document online training for animal research personnel. The AALAS Learning Library is a great tool for online training - the Help documentation that comes with the program - not so much.

You will log into the AALAS Learning Library (ALL) through the Rutgers ACFC Protocol Submission Website. New personnel must register at https://acfc.rutgers.edu in order to use the AALAS Learning Library.

AALAS Learning Library Registration

From the ACFC website home page, click on Orientation Training in the left menu bar. You will be taken directly to the Orientation Course. The first time you enter the AALAS site, you will be asked to register. Fill in the required fields which are marked with an asterisk. You will only have to do this once.

On completing the registration on the AALAS Learning Library site, you will see a summary of your registration information. In the future, you will be taken directly to the Rutgers course, "Orientation for Animal Care and Use at Rutgers". To navigate to the course:

Libraries -> Animal Care and Use Courses
-> Rutgers Orientation -> Orientation to Animal Care and Use at Rutgers

Start the Course

Click Course (bottom of page) to proceed to the course (duh! It's actually hard to find.)

2. Taking a Course

Navigating Lessons and Pages

The Orientation Course consists of approximately 17 Lessons. Each Lesson consists of one or more Pages. The navigation menu items are at the bottom of each page. Lessons may be viewed a page at a time (Show Each) or all pages for a Lesson can be viewed at once (Show All). The formatting as provided with the AALAS Learning Library may seem confusing when viewed in the latter format. Titles and links can be confused. Until we fix this, you may wish to stay with Show Each.

Page Navigation

Move from page to page by clicking a page number or using the green Left and Right arrows. (Do not confuse the arrows with the Next Lesson link.) Page numbers and arrows are not visible in Show All mode.

Show All/Show Each

Toggle between two modes.

Next Lesson

Move to next Lesson. Don’t confuse this with green arrows. In Show Each mode, if not on the last page of a Lesson, you will miss pages. You will not get credit for completing the Course. If you think you might have skipped a page, you can check your status in My Transcripts (see below).

Comments

Feel free to comment on any page. These comments go to the AALAS national office and to the Rutgers course coordinator. Be helpful. Be kind. Comments are not anonymous!

Practice Questions

Each lesson may have one or more practice questions. These are designed to test your comprehension. No credit. Many questions will provide feedback for correct and incorrect answers. Practice questions may or may not appear on your Final Exam. The course is very thorough. What is not covered in the Lessons is covered on the Final Exam!

Final Exam

This link is always visible but should not be used until you have read all Lessons.

A note about links

You will see hyperlinks throughout the course. Links provide additional information for those who just can’t enough information about animal research. YOU WILL NOT BE TESTED ON INFORMATION ON LINKED PAGES. Links appear as bold green text without underlining. There are two types of links. They appear the same.

  • "References" – internal links that open a page in your current browser window. Use the "Close Window" button to return to the course.
  • External Links – open a new window or tab and take you to a website outside the AALAS Learning Library

3. Exploring the AALAS Learning Library

Librairies

You will see menu options for “Libraries”. Unless you are interested in AALAS certification as a laboratory animal care technician, the only Library you are interested in is the Animal Care and Use Course.

In the AALAS Learning Library site, click Libraries and Animal Care and Use Course to see a list of Tracks.

Tracks and Courses

Courses are organized in Tracks . There are two groups of tracks.

  • AALAS Tracks

The AALAS tracks include courses on a wide range of subjects. As a Rutgers animal user you are welcome to explore any of these courses. PI’s may wish to use these courses for training of laboratory staff. The AALAS Learning Library will maintain a transcript of all courses taken.

  • Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey Tracks

Here you will find the mandatory orientation course required of all Rutgers animal users. (If you have attended a live and in-person orientation seminar, you need not take this course.)

If you explore the AALAS Learning Library website and need to find your way back to the Orientation Course, do this:

Libraries -> Animal Care and Use Courses
-> Rutgers Orientation -> Orientation to Animal Care and Use at Rutgers

Beyond the Mandatory Orientation Course

  • AALAS Tracks - Take advantage of additional courses on a wide range of subjects in laboratory animal science and medicine.
  • Course Catalog - View or print a list of all courses available in the AALAS Learning Library.
  • Help Center - Help documentation for the AALAS Learning Center. The Individual Users Guide is not very helpful. Hence, this tutorial.
  • Subscription Center - Edit your personal profile with My Profile and view the status of your training in My Transcript.

4. Final Exam

Before you start

You must read all Lessons and take the Final Exam online in order to get credit for the mandatory orientation course. You must achieve a score of 80% to pass.

You should complete all Lessons before taking the Final Exam. You can confirm that you have been to all pages of all lessons by viewing My Transcript (see below).

Open the exam:

  • From the Course opening page, click Exam (next to the Course) link, or
  • From any Page in any Lesson, click Final Exam
  • Click Click here to generate the exam

Taking the Final Exam

Use navigation arrows to move from page to page. Do not use your browser window back and forward arrows. As with the course, you have a choice of viewing one question at a time or viewing all questions at once. You must complete the exam in one sitting. The exam will close without saving your answers after one hour of keyboard inactivity.

Be sure to click Submit to save your answers and get credit for the exam.

Confirm that you have received credit by checking My Transcript.

A record of your taking the Orientation Course can also be found on the ACFC Protocol Submission Website. Click my_OHP_info. You will see a date in the "Training" field. Allow 48 hours for the website to reflect your training status.

Using 'My Transcript' in the AALAS Learning Library to Track Your Progress

You can track your progress in the mandatory Rutgers course Orientation to Care and Use of Animals at Rutgers as well as other courses you take in the AALAS Learning Library.

Click Subscriber Center -> Personal Access -> My Transcript

Your transcript will list any course you have begun. For a given course, any lessons you have not completed will be listed in Lessons Remaining. (You can also identify incomplete lessons in a course. In the left menu bar, completed lesson titles are yellow, lessons not completed are white.) When you complete the Final Exam, your Score will appear. If you pass the exam with a score of 80%, the date of completion will appear under Exam Passed. If you have completed all lessons (no lessons remaining) and have a passing score, you will see a Course Completion date. Congratulations, you can work with animals at Rutgers once you have Occupational Health approval!
